Incorrect Personnel

Before I reveal the purpose behind this article, I would like to ask some questions that may create a better understanding for you on where I am coming from.

Are Business owners in Bahrain recruiting the right caliber of staff to drive and/or represent their companies?

Do they understand the process of recruiting these appropriate people?

After 9 years experience in the Bahraini Market, I have witnessed so many elements that have contributed towards the failure of the business sector up until this point. The number one however has been incorrect employment procedures and agreements.

This includes the heavy weight players in the market who have made the critical error of appointing the wrong personnel. This in turn has contributed greatly to the market veering in a negative direction. A direction that no one is willing to take responsibility for or to help in the rebuilding process, as admittance to this could be seen as damaging to their reputations and prestige.

Reputation and prestige plays a major role in the Arab community and this leads to so many instances where the company will absorb the blow that they have self inflicted in order to preserve their professional image. Admitting to being at fault has never been an option and instead, inventive correctional measures have been taken which fall short or create new problems for the market and themselves. In my opinion, there is no merit in this approach that will feed the underlying problems that we as business professionals have to deal with on a daily basis.

Recruiting the wrong personnel will not only damage and destroy what one has strived to build, but it will also damage the very reputation that one is trying to preserve at apparently any cost.

I have dealt with and been involved in almost every single sector and industry that is present in this country and am continuously witnessing the same unprofessional behavior and decision making  that causes nothing but turmoil and problems for all those affected.

We all love to follow and tweet the quotes of genius and creative business minds from before or during our time here on earth.  We see these revelations that have been discovered, which we should be learning from and letting improve our lives, situations and business practices. Instead, we choose to repeat the same mistake over and over. Einstein once stated that the definition of madness is attempting the exact same action again and again and expecting a different result. How right he was.

Is it because the professionals we need to insure a positive market are nonexistent or unobtainable? Or, is it that we expect to pay peanuts and not to attract monkeys to these roles?

If you take the decision to underpay staff, then you don’t deserve to be a business owner or a leader, simply because you don’t consider the future of your business and its employees and are only seeking to make money off the backs of others. Of course one has to look after the finances of a company and that company needs to be profitable, however, if we choose to save money by placing the precious business into the hands of an inept individual or individuals and then wonder why it is all falling down around us, maybe the owner should consider stepping down.

By choosing to employ under qualified or inexperienced people, you are digging your companies’ grave with your own hands.

Here’s a small piece of advice. Seek to employ the correct people through the correct recruiting agencies. It is their job to find the individual best suited to the relevant position. This is an area that they have the experience in. Don’t assume you know best.  Insist on the correct process and guarantees. Once you have this process underway, your business could start to receive the lift that is desperately needed.

  2. Congratulation in your first blog ! Recruiting new employees is one the largest expense that a business has to contend with. To find the right person for the job you will need to go through a series of easy steps to recruit the right employee. Employer’s has to evaluate and determine the needs for the position. Most of the business owners here in Bahrain do not know how to separate the essential job function to the non-essential job function at the time when to develop the job description. The essential job functions are vital and repetitive. Importantly the reference check is essential that can provide a useful insight about the candidate’s performance from previous job undertaken.

Recruiting for the quality employees will require a budgetary consideration. If you have a limited budget, you prefer to recruit from within as mostly of the companies here do apply a customary recommendation procedures but if budget is determined to be ok then the use of recruitment agency’s is advisable and they can expect a better and screened applicants.

Considerably, most business owners implements probationary period to clearly determine the capacity of each employees. Once they are proven suitable or not suitable for the job then, its time to search for a more qualified right individuals for the post.

A lot of companies here in Bahrain did not practice implementing a Company Policy, on how to evaluate your employee’s performance at work, procedures, etc… such policy is needed in order to obtain proper set-up and the application of professionalism. The findings indicate a complex set of relationships, and challenge the simplistic causal link between attitudes and practice of the job description. In these way, the evaluation process will be easier to define.

  3. Nice to see your first blog and happy to comment as the first person. The points mentioned are absolutely right. As we all management professionals learn from our management schools, that planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling are the major key factors which determines the success of every business sector, in which planning to staff / recruit right personnels is an inevitable step to build up your company. The moment you find a person does not suit to what he is recruited for, it better to drop him/her out, before it becomes too late and could damage your company's reputation. nice points.. expecting more.. All the very best..
